Cristiano Ronaldo fondly called “CR7” and Lionel Messi jointly have this one for their milestone achievements in the past week and half. We all know both of them have set and smashed all sorts of records in their glorious individual football careers, however, in these cases, they attained new, amazing heights.
CR7 amassed five goals in both legs (brace in the first and a hat-trick in the second) of Real Madrid’s quarter final clash against German and fellow European giants Bayern Munich leading them to the semi final in which they faced fierce rivals Atletico Madrid and still went on to score a hat-trick which has placed the merengues in good stead for the final in Cardiff next month. However, it was in the second leg of the quarter final that the Portuguese stole all the headlines. He got to the 100-goal mark in the history of the UEFA Champions League, something unprecedented. Recall he, last season, broke the long-held (by another Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez) record of total number of goals ever scored in the competiton by a single player.
In Messi’s case, he did score his 500th goal for Barcelona and guess what: it was an irony because he did so against a rival player in CR7 and against a rival club in Real Madrid who were coming off a triumphant quarter final over Bayern Munich in which Ronaldo sets his own record! It was a ‘killer’of a goal in the last minute of the el-Classico in fact the last kick of the game and has consequently blown the LaLiga title race wide open. A heart-breaking moment for the Los Blancos family including the fans, it was.
Thumbs up to these great men of the beautiful game 😀
